It’s day 28 of the government shutdown. Here’s what that looks like:
About 800,000 federal workers aren’t being paid. In Charlotte last week, one federal employee stopped at Crisis Assistance Ministry on her way to work, hoping to get help in paying her rent. In River Falls, Wis., a federal employee with diabetes has been taking insulin less often, to make sure it doesn’t run out; she is worried she could not afford more.
The Food and Drug Administration just spent three weeks without doing routine food inspections, on salad greens, cheese and other items.
National Parks are without supervision or maintenance, allowing trash to build up.
In Portland, Maine and elsewhere, the process of buying a house is taking longer.
In Texas and elsewhere, immigration courts are delaying hearings.
In the Midwest, farmers are not getting data that help them decide what to plant.
In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, one tribe of Chippewa Indians is going without about 0,000 every day — federal money that usually helps “keep health clinics staffed, food pantry shelves full and employees paid.”
In parts of the West, training for firefighters has been halted.
In Colorado, craft breweries are losing out on sales because they can’t get approval to sell new beers in other states.
In many cases, federal agencies have taken temporary steps to minimize the effects of the shutdown — not so different from the approach of that Wisconsin worker who is rationing her insulin. Yet if the shutdown continues, many of those temporary steps will become untenable, and the effects will begin to increase. Soon, lists like the one I’ve put together here will start looking much worse.
A reminder: This shutdown isn’t about some “partisan divide.” It’s about President Trump. Last month, Senate Republicans and Democrats agreed to a deal to avoid a shutdown. Trump, goaded by cable television hosts and Rush Limbaugh, rejected the deal. Since then, Republicans have changed their position and backed the president. This is his — and now their — shutdown.

The Big Scoop
Buzzfeed News published a huge scoop last night: that Trump directed Michael Cohen, then the president’s lawyer, to lie to Congress about Trump’s dealings with Russia. “IF IT IS TRUE,” the conservative writer David French tweeted, “this is evidence remarkably similar to evidence used to build the impeachment counts against Clinton and Nixon. Both Clinton and Nixon encouraged witnesses to make false statements under oath.”
Is it true? I find it credible and am operating on the assumption that it is more likely true than not. We will probably know more in coming days. Major investigative scoops are usually matched by other news organizations, doing their own reporting. If Buzzfeed’s story is corroborated by other publications, believe it. If a week passes and it’s not, be skeptical.
